The Digital Futures in Teacher Education (DEFT) Open Textbook is committed to providing a website that is accessible to the widest possible audience, regardless of technology or ability. We are actively working to increase the accessibility and usability of our website and in doing so adhere to many of the available standards and guidelines. This page lists some of the features used to make the resources easier to use. If you are experiencing problems using the resources, or have any questions and comments about their accessibility, please let us know by emailing deft@shu.ac.uk

This site has been designed to display in the following browsers under the stated operating systems:
Windows: Vista and Windows 7
Browsers: Internet Explorer (Version IE9); Google Chrome (Version 22.0.1229.94 m); Firefox; Safari; Opera
Formats of documents
All the pages on the site are available in MSWord by way of Thinking Space. The whole document is available in EPUB and PDF formats
Accessibility and Usability Features
The Open Textbook website offers the following usability and accessibility features to help users. Some of these are built into the Accessibility bar at the top left corner of the page.
Increasing the text size: The majority of this website has been designed to be legible at larger font sizes. The two most common methods to increase the font size on our web pages are:
- Use the accessibility tools built in to the website.
- Use the browser text-resize functionality. Modern browsers allow you to change the size of the text should you want to. To do this, hold down the Control Button and press + or – to increase or decrease text size respectively. For browsers where this does not work, please refer to the browser’s help documentation.
Changing the page colour: There are several ways to change the colours of our web pages to make them more readable:
Use the accessibility tools built in to the website
- Use the browser/operating system options available.
Rich media content accessibility: Written transcripts of all audio and video elements are available as both web pages and Adobe PDF files. All images have been provided with alternative descriptions.
Using the resources without a mouse: All materials have been designed to be accessible using the keyboard. Use the Tab key to access navigational elements such as buttons and interactive diagrams. Pop-up windows with scroll bars can be accessed with the tab key, with the scroll-bar being operable via the up and down arrow keys.
Accessing the resources with a screen reader: All resources have a narration of the main text. However if you use a screen reader, we recommend using the Text Only version for each resource.
